Town of 1770 -
Little did Lieutenant James Cook know when he first set foot on Queensland soil that a picturesque seaside village, The Town Of 1770, named for that famous event, would continue to entice explorers even into the twentyfirst century.
The town is surrounded on three sides by the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay, an area rich in wildlife and natural beauty. Joseph Banks Environmental Park preserves fauna and flora of the peninsula. Surf and still water beaches backed by rugged granite outcrops, a variety of holiday accommodation, restaurants, a general store and small marina make a relaxed holiday spot.
The Town of 1770 is also a departure point for day reef cruises and fishing charters to the outer Great Barrier Reef.
For the camping enthusiast, four National Parks - Deepwater, Eurimbula, Mount Colosseum and Round Hill - offer wilderness camping and hiking. All are best accessed with Four Wheel Drive vehicle or as part of a guided tour.
